About Homeopathy
Homeopathy is a gentle, completely natural form of healing that treats symptoms as expressions of disharmony within the patient. Thus treatment is of the whole body rather than just one part.
The symptoms can be acute or chronic, as the remedies work by stimulating the body’s own healing mechanism into action. Homeopathy can treat all kinds of problems, is suitable for all ages and can be used alongside other medical treatments.
It is based on the principle of using like to cure like. It treats an illness with medicine made from a substance that would produce similar symptoms in a healthy person. It has great popularity in France, Spain and India and is a growing alternative to orthodox treatment in the UK.
'Homoio' means similar and 'pathos' means suffering or disease. Homeopathy treats an illness with medicine made from a substance the would produce similar symptoms in a healthy person. This is very different from orthodox medicine ('allopathic' means opposite suffering). For example an allergic reaction may be treated with homeopathic Histamine, the same substance that is produced in the body from the allergic reaction.
Samuel Hahnemann was the founder of homeopathy. A german Doctor practicing in the 1790's, he became dissillusioned with orthodox (allopathic) medicine and all its side effects and started experimenting with a remedy called Cinchona, from which Quinine is derived, and its ability to treat malaria. He found that in large doses it produced the same effect as malaria, but that as he diluted and succussed the Cinchona ('potentised' it), it could then be used as a cure.
